Maritime security is concerned with the prevention of intentional damage through sabotage, subversion, or terrorism. Maritime security is one of the three basic roles of the United States Coast Guard has gradually developed in response to a series of catastrophic events, which began in 1917.

Maritime piracy and maritime terrorism are known threats to global shipping, with piracy imposing substantial human and economic costs – particularly off the coast of Somalia – in recent years. Drug, weapon, and human trafficking also have an increasingly well-documented maritime dimension.


Maritime functions are defined as broad groups of economic activities that are related to the seas or to sea resources. Maritime functions thus cover the possible uses of seas and oceans by mankind.
